Empire mall expected to reopen in a month

The Empire shopping mall which was closed following an explosion on Wednesday is expected to reopen in a month, said Empire Shopping Gallery general manager May Woo.

She said the first 10 days will be to clean up the foyer area and pedestrian walkways (common areas) while the remaining 20 days is for tenants to do renovation at their store.
"We expect the shopping mall to be open to the public in one month. Preparation is underway to reopen this shopping centre," she told a press conference in Subang Jaya, near here today.
Meanwhile, group manager of Empire Hotel Ricky Ho said Empire Hotel was ready to welcome guests back after voluntarily halting operation as precautionary safety measure following the explosion.
"The unfortunate incident has resulted in the hotel cancelling all reservations made for accommodation and banquet at least until Oct 15," he said.
Massive explosion
Meanwhile, the Supply and Price of Gas head of Energy Commission, Roslee Esman said investigation was continuing to find the cause of the explosion.
"It will take between one to three months to know the cause. Reports by the Fire Department and Energy Commission will reveal the actual cause of the explosion.
"They are investigating from various angles," he added.
Roslee said an inadvertent gas release from a lower ground floor unit in the mall was suspected to be the cause of the explosion.
"From initial report, the central gas piping system in the mall was in good condition as the last inspection by the commission was only conducted in July.
The 3.45am explosion injured four people while nearly the entire stretch of the front portion of the newly-built mall was blown out, damaging several cafes, restaurants and clothing stores.
