MCA: Pakatan's stand on hudud mere doublespeak

MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong today pointed out that Pakatan Rakyat’s stand on the thorny issue of the implementation of the hudud law is mere doublespeak with the intention of hoodwinking the public.
MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong today pointed out that Pakatan Rakyat’s stand on the thorny issue of the implementation of the hudud law is mere doublespeak with the intention of hoodwinking the public.
In a statement today, Wee, who is also Deputy Education Minister, said that this is because the conclusions from Pakatan’s emergency meeting on hudud late last night are “contradictory”.
He added that the conclusions, which came after more than three hours of discussions, also do not answer pivotal questions on the matter.
“It was announced that there will be no implementation of hudud laws, but on the other hand it is stated that there must be common ground while respecting the positions of PAS and DAP.
“This shows that the meeting was of no use because each party has its own political and differing ideologies... thus proving they are divided,” he said.
According to Wee (right), this inability to see eye-to-eye in terms of ideology shows that the coalition’s common policy is “suspicious”.
“In the end, who is in charge of Pakatan? I believe the meeting... is merely a plot to shut everyone’s mouth because as long as the implementation (of the law) is not received favourably, the issue will continue to be brought up over and over again.
“Just remember that (Pakatan) is only playing political games in an attempt to make us confused with our concerns over this issue,” he said.
PAS will still push for hudud
As if proving the deputy minister’s assertions, PAS Youth chief Nasruddin Hassan said that PAS will continue to pursue its goal of implementing hudud, despite Pakatan’s stand to not go ahead with it.
“I, representing PAS Youth, support the Kelantan MB and PAS spiritual leader in the pursuit of implementing Allah’s commands not just for the sake of gaining support, but in the struggle to ensure that Allah’s laws are implemented on this earth, particularly in Kelantan,” he said.
This would mean pushing for the implementation of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993 and Terengganu Syariah Criminal Code 2003.
In a separate press statement, Nasruddin (left) explained that this is consistent with Pakatan’s stand to to uphold the existing common policies, and to agree to disagree on other matters.
“Respecting does not mean agreeing.. Respecting also does not mean objecting. Just like Islam cannot stop non-Muslims from practicing and propagating their faiths, Muslims, too, cannot be stopped from implementing the hudud law,” he said.
He added that the stand taken by non-Muslim partners in Pakatan also differs from Umno, which represents Malay-Muslims, who have completely stonewalled the idea of implementing the hudud law.
Pakatan had in the wee hours of today said that it will uphold the federal constitution, in so far as the hudud law is concerned, implying that it will not seek constitutional amendments required for the law’s implementation.
Gerakan congratulates Pakatan
This was read as a rejection of the law, which was lauded by Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang.
In a statement today, Tan, who is vocal against the hudud on microblogging site Twitter, congratulated Pakatan for rejecting the Islamic law.
“The decision clearly shows that hudud is rejected by a majority of Pakatan leaders... the implementation of the law in Malaysia is only the dream of a handful of PAS leaders,” he said.
