EC challenges PAS to show non-citizen voters

Responding to the PAS youth allegation that non-citizens have been agranted voting rights, the Election Commission (EC) challenged the movement to show the alleged individuals in person before making assumption.

"Bring forward the said individuals if PAS has concrete evidence besides just releasing name lists and documents related to the issue," EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar told a Malay language daily.
According to a report in today's Sinar Harian, Wan Ahmad cited the case of Mismah which proved that PAS' allegation was baseless.
Mismah, a voter in the Kuala Selangor parliamentary constituency, was discovered by PAS to be listed as a permanent resident on the National Registration Department (NRD) website.
Hours after a report on the matter was published, Mismah was subseqeuntly 'upgraded' by the NRD to Malaysian citizen.
The NRD later clarified that Mismah was granted citizenship in January this year after having been a permanent resident for 29 years, but the agency did not explain the discrepancy on its website.
Unperturbed by the issue, PAS youth continued to publish names arousing suspicion in the electoral roll.
The latest were four voters listed as green identification card (IC) holders on the NRD website.
Green ICs are issued to non-citizens born in Malaysia and possess Malaysian birth certificates, but are unable to verify their parents' background. They are not entitled to voting rights.
However, the NRD clarified to Malaysiakini that one of the four voters, 27-year-old Pandan electorate Yusnati Haris Lakmana, is in fact a citizen.
An NRD officer explained that Yusnati is still listed as a green IC holder on the website because the publicly-accessible database has not been updated.
The department has yet to respond to the question on the status of another three voters also listed as green IC holders in the website.
