Mosques in Selangor told not to invite politicians for talks

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) today confirmed that Shah Alam Member of Parliament Khalid Samad does not have the credentials to teach or give religious ‘ceramah’ or talks in mosques and surau in the state.

As such, Mais chairman Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said the move by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in calling up Khalid to give a statement on the investigation concerning a complaint that he was giving religious ceramah without credentials at a surau in Klang last month was valid under the existing law.
“YB Khalid Samad cannot give any religious talks including ‘tazkirah’, ceramah, lectures or any religious inputs ar mosques and surau in the whole of Selangor state as he does not have any credentials from Mais,” he said in a statement in Shah Alam.
Mohamad Adzib said the decision of the Mais Credentials Committee Meeting on June 23, which rejected Khalid’s appeal on the withdrawal of his (Khalid’s) credentials, was made in line with the consent of the Sultan of Selangor not to grant the credential to teach or give talks on Islamic religion to any politician in mosques and surau in the state.
In KUALA LUMPUR, Khalid, who is also the Selangor PAS commissioner II, continued to link Umno in the rejection by Jais of his application to seek the credentials to give ceramah.
Expressing his dissatisfaction on the move by Jais, Khalid claimed that Umno had abused its influence to destroy Jais which should be an independent body.
“I want this thing to be corrected. The credentials for (Selangor PAS commissioner) Dr Rani Othman were also not renewed. He had applied to have his credentials renewed but this was rejected without stating any reason.
“Umno is afraid because PAS is perceived to be closer to the community through the ceramah held at the surau and mosques. So, when we are closer to the people, Umno imposes restrictions,” he told a press conference at the PAS headquarters today.
Khalid was reported to have given a statement to Jais yesterday as he was alleged to have delivered a ceramah at a surau in Selangor, last month and he was also expected to be charged at the Klang Syariah Court on Nov 24 following the allegation.
Also present at the press conference was PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
