Kelantan gov't: No invite to debate was issued

The PAS government of Kelantan has denied that it invited Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar to a public debate with PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu over the issue of independence activist Muhammed Indera.

A report published by PAS organ Harakah Daily yesterday quotes Kelantan state exco member Mohmed Fadli Hassan as saying that the state government did not issue any official letter to anyone to debate such an issue.
He said a letter was sent to Khairy (left), but this was merely a 'private inquiry' by his deputy, Baihaqi Atiqullah, asking Khairy for his view should be a debate between him and Mohamad Sabu, or more popularly known as Mat Sabu, was to be held.
"Baihaqi is my deputy, he only asked for the views of Khairy through email. It was not an official invitation.
"Baihaqi and Khairy have established a personal relationship before this, and the inquiry was a personal thing," Fadli is quoted as saying.
The Kelantan PAS publicity chief said the state government was prepared to hold a debate, but it must be between Mat Sabu and Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.
"We don't want Khairy to manipulate the PAS deputy president as a stepping stone to raise his popularity within Umno.
"Khairy has not been accepted within Umno and the government, and he is using this issue to raise his popularity," Fadli said.
He accused Khairy of twisting the emailed inquiry into an official invitation from the Kelantan state government in his micro-blogging website Twitter, which led to the misunderstanding.
After Mat Sabu rejected the debate, arguing that Khairy as a Youth wing leader should debate with the PAS Youth leader, Khairy has been abusing Mat Sabu, calling him such things as a "coward" and a "eunuch".
In another related development, Johor PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kayat challenged Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman (left) to an open dialogue over the latter's statement yesterday that labelled Muhammed Indera, widely known as Mat Indera, as a terrorist.
"I deny the statement released by Ghani yesterday. I as a Johorian feel very disappointed with his views. To me, it seems like he's having a colonial mindset.
"I also want to challenge Ghani to an open dialogue in Muar, Johor!" Suhaizan said in a statement today.
The Bukit Kepong police station, which was attacked by an anti-colonial armed unit led by Mat Indera in 1950, is located in the district of Muar.
