CPO: Probe papers on Mat Sabu's statement completed

Police have completed the investigation paper on Mohamad Sabu, widely known as Mat Sabu, concerning his alleged statement that the communist terrorist involved in the Bukit Kepong attack, identified as Mat Indera, should be regarded as a national hero.

Penang Police Chief Ayub Yaakob said the paper was submitted to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman today for scrutiny and would be referred to the Public Prosecutor’s office in the near future.
He said police had recorded a statement from the PAS deputy president on Sunday.
“Police had also recorded 68 statements from reporters, independent witnesses as well as those who had lodged police reports against him to complete the probe, but whether he would be charged or otherwise would depend on the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” he told a press conference in George Town today.
He said Mohamad would also be investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for issuing a statement that created a public outcry.
Ayub said that as of yesterday, 266 police reports against Mat Sabu had been received throughout the country.
Mat Sabu, in his ceramah at Tasek Gelugor, Penang on Aug 21, was quoted as saying that the communist terrorist who had killed members of the security forces and their families in the Bukit Kepong tragedy was the real hero in the struggle for the country’s independence.
He had refused to retract his statement in the ceramah despite being asked to do so by various groups including his ally, Karpal Singh, who is also DAP chairman.
Meanwhile in BANDAR BAHARU, the parliamentary coordinator for Kulim/Bandar Baharu, Helmy Abdul Khan urged police to take stern action against Mat Sabu to prevent him from making further seditious statements that could create chaos.
Mat Sabu’s statement could lead to hatred between the various races in the country, he said after leading eight political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in lodging police reports against the PAS leader at the Bandar Baharu District Police Headquarters in Serdang.
Those who had lodged the police reports were the Kulim/Bandar Baharu Umno division, the MCA, MIC, Gerakan and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) from the same division, the Ex-Services Association of Malaysia (PBTM) Kulim, the Malaysian Ex-Policemen’s Association (PBPM) Kulim and Bandar Baharu District Youth Council.
More than 200 members and representatives of NGOs held a peaceful demonstration to protest against Mat Sabu’s statement.
