However, when asked further, he neither confirmed nor denied the report entitled ‘Azizan resists PAS leadership’s moves to replace him’ in the MCA-owned The Star.
But Mohamad, who is better known as Mat Sabu (right), confirmed that national leaders, including PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, will be in Alor Setar to discuss the matter this weekend.
He said the leadership would be meeting various quarters, especially local PAS leaders, to discuss the situation in Kedah which includes Azizan’s health issues.
“No decision has been made yet (about Azizan’s status). We will be meeting all our state leaders to discuss the matter,” he told Malaysiakini.
Mat Sabu, a former Kuala Kedah MP, declined to comment further on the case, and said that after the weekend meeting, the situation would be clearer.
The Star report today said Hadi was scheduled to seek an audience with the Sultan of Kedah regarding the transition, which Hadi had denied.
The report had said three state executive members - Phahrolrazi Mohd Zawawi (Pengkalan Kundor), Amiruddin Hamzah (Anak Bukit) and Mohamad Taulan Mat Rasul (Tokai) - were poised to replace Azizan. Amiruddin and Mohamad Taulan have issued denials about the report, while Phahrolrazi declined to comment.
PAS information chief Tuan Man Tuan Ibrahim issued a strong denial today, saying that the issue was never brought up in any of the party's official meetings.
Meanwhile, PAS party organ Harakah today quoted Hadi (left) as strongly denying that the national leadership had asked Azizan to quit his job.
Expressing surprise at the allegation, Hadi added that there were no calls from any of the central leaders to demand that Azizan vacate his post, the newspaper reported.
“Azizan will continue as MB although he needs rest as he is still undergoing treatment for his recent heart problem,” said Hadi, responding to The Star report.
Hadi urged party members and supporters not to be influenced by the contents of the “baseless” report.
