Panel set up to look into varsity enrolment for UEC

A technical committee has been set up to look into the matter of university entrance for holders of the Unified Examination Certificate, according to MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek.
A technical committee has been set up to look into the matter of university entrance for holders of the Unified Examination Certificate, according to MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek.
He said the setting up of the committee was the outcome of discussions between the party's leaders and Higher Education Minister Mohd Khaled Nordin about three months ago.
"MQA (Malaysian Qualifications Agency) is evaluating the syllabus used for the UEC. There are some complications because it does not follow the national education syllabus," he told reporters today.
Earlier, he had witnessed the handing over study grants totalling RM2.5 million to 50 students who excelled in the UEC examination by Yayasan 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). The grants were presented by 1MDB chairman Lodin Wok Kamaruddin.
Also present were Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai and Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong.
Committee to resolve all issues
Chua added that he was confident that the technical committee would be able to resolve all issues pertaining to university entrance of UEC holders.
Meanwhile, Lodin said each of the recipients were being given grants of RM15,000 annually for higher studies locally and abroad.
"This is the second year were giving this grants. Last year, 50 UEC holders were given similar grants. I hope the recipients will get to join the Malaysian workforce in helping Malaysia to be on par with the more advanced countries," he said.
