The motorcycle that former Batu Sapi member of Parliament Edmund Chong was riding when it collided with another vehicle was in good condition, an auto workshop owner told the Coroner’s Court in Kota Kinabalu today.

Yap Sing Keong said two weeks before the accident, Chong had sent his motorcycle for a regular service at his workshop in Likas near Kota Kinabalu.

“Datuk (Chong) had always been very particular about his motorcycle. He would send his motorcycle to my workshop for service or repair even for the smallest glitch.

“For as long as I knew him, he has never made any modification to his motorcycle. He preferred his machines as original as when he first bought them,” he said.

Yap, who knew Chong as a fellow superbike enthusiast since before the former MP’s rise in politics, was one of the deponents in the inquest into the death of Chong who died in a road accident at Jalan Coastal Highway, between Sembulan and Tanjung Aru, on Oct 9 last year.

The workshop owner also told the court, presided by coroner Melissa Chia, that Chong owned seven superbikes.

Yap also said he did not sell the helmet that Chong was using during that fateful day.

“I know that the helmet was not bought in Malaysia. It was bought in Germany and it has an European standard approval, like Sirim (Bhd) in Malaysia,” he said.
