Wanita Umno has been urged to help religious authorities explain Islam to Muslim converts among the Orang Asli community.

Umno supreme council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob said efforts to explain Islam to Orang Asli converts need to be enhanced so that they fully understand the teachings.

"Certain groups have been visiting Orang Asli villages to persuade them to return to their original beliefs. They have been to Orang Asli villages here to get support and persuade them to embrace other religions," he told reporters after launching Nur Hidayah programme organised by Wanita Umno and Bera District Women's Development Council today.

Ismail, who is also domestic trade, cooperatives and consumer affairs minister said the groups gave various assistance including food and money to persuade the converts.

"We can't ignore this as there is possibility that Orang Asli Muslim converts may commit apostasy and return to their original beliefs."

He said Muslims should be united because there are signs that certain quarters are trying to meddle in Islamic affairs.

"Umno members should include Orang Asli in its programmes so that the minority community don't feel marginalised," he added.
