'Jais raid given higher profile than polls fraud'

PAS has accused the government of trying to drown out pressing issues of electoral fraud by harping on last week’s raid on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais).

“The (government-linked) media has not highlighted the discrepancies in the electoral roll that we have found, but has merely reported the Election Commission’s technical response to this,” PAS central committee member Idris Ahmad (left) said when contacted this afternoon.
Idris noted that it has been a BN strategy to use the traditional media and government agencies to shore up support for itself.
“Umno and BN know that this issue (the raid) is important for them,” he said.
In a statement earlier, Idris said PAS has initiated efforts to resolve the issues raised from the Jais raid and that this should not be played out in the media.
"PAS will be meeting Jais and DUMC to get an understanding of the situation. Our country has laws, so anyone who does something wrong will be punished. The media is not an arena to solve this issue," he said.
Idris also questioned Umno’s sincerity in championing the cause of Islam, citing previous instances of “hypocrisy” in handling such issues as the ban on gambling by the PAS-led Kelantan government.
Protest in Shah Alam
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has earned the wrath of Muslims NGOs after expressing regret for the Jais raid on the ‘thanksgiving dinner’, which 12 Muslims had attended last Wednesday.
Khalid took more flak today. The Berita Harian website reported that some 20 NGOs had protested outside the Selangor state secretariat in Shah Alam in support of Jais' actions.
The protesters reportedly wore masks depicting Khalid, state exco Hasan Ali and Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, while carrying a toilet bowl, toilet brushes and brooms.
However, the daily did not elaborate on the motive behind the stunt.
In related development, Umno Youth exco member Lokman Adam said in a text-message that the Malay Veteran Soldiers Association will submit a memo to Khalid at the state secretariat tomorrow in defence of "religion, race, and country".
