Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today underwent successful arthroscopic surgery of the left knee which he had injured in a sports event.

The surgery, conducted at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, took 45 minutes from 8.30am, director-general of Health Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said in a statement.

“The doctors who performed the surgery were satisfied with the outcome of the operation,” he said.

Dr Hasan said the prime minister had been advised to rest at the hospital up to Wednesday, and that he was expected to resume duties next week.  

He said minimum surgery was conducted with the aid of an arthroscope to view the injury to the knee, and a surgical instrument was used to repair it.

An arthroscope is very small instrument guided by a lighted scope attached to a television monitor.
