Jais, the Selangor Religious Department, said today that it does not have the power to direct entertainment centres in the state to stop operating during Ramadan.

Jais director Marzuki Hussin said the operating times of entertainment centres were fixed by local authorities which issued their licences.

However, Jais enforced the Syariah Criminal Enactment 1995 against Muslims committing offences, he told reporters here after attending the monthly gathering of Jais.

He said that Jais monitored entertainment centres in Selangor to ensure that Muslims honour Ramadan and did not patronise them.

Marzuki reminded Muslims to make sure that the halal logo exhibited by eating joints that they go to was issued by either Jakim, the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia, or Mais, the Selangor Islamic Council.
