Towards university quality standards in Asean

Malaysia is prepared to lead in carrying out educational development projects related to university quality standards in the Asean region.

Malaysia's experience in the field could be shared with other Asean countries and its dialogue partners, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (right) said in Denpasar, Indonesia, today.
"We are interested to play a role in establishing quality standards and in other matters as we feel that Malaysia already has a strong foundation in this area.
"If we are given the opportunity to be involved in these projects together with our Asean and dialogue partners, we can lead," Muhyiddin told Malaysian journalists at the end of informal meetings of Asean Education Ministers.
The meetings were chaired by Indonesia's National Education Minister, Mohammad Nuh.
Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, had voiced Malaysia's interest in this area at the informal meetings.
Malaysia, he said, had the experience of implementing quality education standards at the university level through the role played by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) of the Higher Education Ministry.
"MQA ensures that the country's quality of education does not drop and adversely impact our undergraduates' academic performance.
"MQA implements a quality assurance system in terms of learning at the universities by using certain criteria compared with the situation in some of the other Asean member countries which may still be at an early stage in this area or may not have many universities," he said.
