Pakatan retreat to focus on general election strategy

Tomorrow's day-long Pakatan Rakyat retreat is expected to see a more co-ordinated effort in the coalition's policies, release of media statements and in plans to make a greater impact in the 13 th general election.

The Petaling Jaya retreat is, among others, to synergise media relations among the three partners PAS, PKR and DAP.
PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (left) and DAP's publicity secretary Tony Pua confirmed with Malaysiakini that these issues comprised the main agenda of the retreat would involve the top leaders of the three parties.
Tuan Ibrahim said 30 to 40 leaders from each party would attend the retreat.
"Besides discussions on general election preparations, the retreat will also strategise media relations," Tuan Ibrahim added, without wanting to give more details.
The discussions on media strategies will also touch on the recent move by the PAS-led Kedah government in handling a ban on 13 entertainment outlets, as announced by Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak.
Azizan had last Wednesday announced the ban on the 13 entertainment outlets in the state during the whole of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in August.
DAP chairperson Karpal Singh has been among the most vocal on the the Kedah PAS move, but has been to be toning down his stance, saying that while the party opposed the closure, it would persuade the Kedah government to drop the move.
This led to to the Kedah-PAS led government dropping the plan to enforce a 1997 state law enacted by the BN that requires bars, discos and karaoke clubs to close during Ramadan, which begins in August, as announced by Azizan's political secretary, Mohd Sanusi Md Nor.
DAP is leading the Penang government, while PKR is leads in administrating Selangor and PAS is running both Kedah and Kelantan, following the 2008 general election.
Pua: Party machineries to work as one
However, one of the main items in the retreat agenda will still be gearing for the 13th general election, in which Pua said Pakatan hoped to make a greater impact than in 2008.
Pua, who also confirmed tomorrow's meeting with the other Pakatan Rakyat partners, said each coalition partner's party machinery would be co-ordinated as one, which is a desired outcome of the retreat.
"First and foremost, it is to co-ordinate the three party machineries into one to ensure an improved performance of the 2008 general election," the Petaling Jaya Utara MP said.
"In the past, the three party machineries operated separately, but following our recent experiences, we will identify ways to co-ordinate efforts to work as a team. We have seen some results in co-ordinating our efforts, as concerted efforts have shown the machinery to be more effective."
Hopefully, Pua said, a co-ordinated effort would see greater success by Pakatan in the coming general election.
Asked whether the meeting and retreat would include discussions on seat negotiations, Pua said that matter would be decided by the respective state leaderships.
"The negotiation is not completed and it would not discussed at the retreat meeting today," he said.
Pua also said the three parties would work to improve co-ordination among themselves in the run-up to the general election and how they could work better together.
