A Kelantan-based activist claims he was assaulted twice by different police officers, after being stopped on the road by the Bachok authorities last month.

Ahmad Syauqey Abdul Ghani, 36, said in a police report that he was on his way to pick up his three daughters from SK Serting about 1.15pm on June 20  when he was stopped by three men in uniform at Wakaf Aik-Kota in Jembal.

“There was no roadblock and there were no cones placed (on the road). I alighted and admitted to the officers that my road tax had expired but that I was on my way to pick up my daughters (from school).

“A man introduced himself as Mohd Fairuz Mohd Hassim and asked for my driving licence. I told him only traffic police could ask for my licence and that he should have asked for my (MyKad).

“When he asked me to produce my (MyKad), I asked for his police authority card. When he showed it briefly I told him I needed time to (look at) his particulars. The officer  seemed suspicious when I said I wanted to call the Bachok police station to verify (his identity).”

azlanAhmad Syauqey, who said he did not hand over his MyKad, alleged that Fairuz roughed him up and stepped on his head. Following this, he was held at the Bachok police station lock-up where Fairuz allegedly subjected him to more rough treatment.

He said he complained about the assault and had refused to leave the lock-up cell.

“However, they pulled me by my arms and in one instance, one man kicked me in the genitals, which caused me pain. The officer, Mohd Azmi, also kicked me on the back. I asked him why he had done that, but he remained quiet,” he said.

When taken to a magistrate’s court, Ahmad Syauqey was charged with obstructing a public officer in performing his duties at Kampung Wakaf Aik about 1.51pm on June 20.

He was also charged under the Police Act 1967 with disorderly conduct at the Bachok police station about noon on June 22.

He claimed trial to both charges and complained to the magistrate about the assault.

Investigations under way

“The magistrate advised me to lodge a police report, which I did last Saturday.”

Lawyer Ang Kai Whei, representing Ahmad Syauqey, confirmed this and said he would meet his client on Wednesday.

Bachok CID head ASP Mat Lias Abdullah confirmed having received the police report and said it is being investigated.

“He was held at the police station after he created problems following the traffic offence. From what I’ve gathered, we had advised him but he seemed stubborn and did not follow instructions.

“He did not cooperate with the authorities. He caused a commotion at the police station and this resulted in (others there) feeling uncomfortable. Since a police report has been lodged, we will investigate his claims.”

Mat Lias said he could not comment any further because of the ongoing probe, but advised those stopped by the police to cooperate.
