NUTP: New education system should imbue 'patriotism'

The Education Ministry should emphasise on imbuing patriotism through the national education system, which is proposed to undergo total review, in order to produce world-class human capital that is loyal and willing to sacrifice for the nation.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Hashim Adnan said the patriotic spirit should be infused into the curriculum and co-curriculum to improve the quality of the national education system, besides ensuring that the curriculum would be relevant for the next 15 to 20 years.
"The national education system is very wide. So, all efforts to improve the system must be seen from various aspects," he told Bernama today.
He was responding to the Education Ministry's proposed total review of the national education system in a bid to improve the quality of national education.
Hashim said changes to the national education system must be done courageously and not hastily after an in-depth, careful study of the system.
He said in the review, the quality of teachers, students and school equipment must also be taken into consideration.
Yayasan Guru Malaysia Berhad chairman and former director-general of Education, Alimuddin Mohd Dom, said the time had come for the government to come up with a new policy to improve the national education system so as to be in tandem with the technological developments taking place and the changing world.
"After the Razak Report 1956, Rahman Talib Report 1960 and national education policy of the 1970s, no new policy has been drawn up, so the proposed total review of the national education system is timely to bring it on par with that of developed countries.
"Malaysia is a fast-developing country and it aims to be a developed nation by 2020. Education is a vital factor to achieve that goal," he said.
Alimuddin said the total review of the national education system could not be done overnight as it required input from various sectors including the industry players, academicians and the universities.
