Merdeka Day celebration to be on Sept 16

This year's 54th Independence Day celebration will be held simultaneously with the Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16, Information Communication and Culture Ministry secretary-general Kamaruddin Siaraf said.

The decision was made because the National Day on Aug 31 falls towards the end of the Ramadan month, he said.
"The Independence Month Committee decided that Sept 16 would be an appropriate day because Sept 16 is also the Malaysia Day," he told reporters after launching the programmes for this year's Independence Month today.
He said activities for the Independence Month would go on as usual but would take into account the fasting month when drawing up programmes.
On the venue for this year's Independence Day celebration, Kamaruddin said it might be held at the Dataran Merdeka.
Among programmes for the Independence Month is a competition for the best expression of patriotism among government agencies, private sector, village managements, schools, housing estates and individuals as well as among arch managements.
The competition takes place from the first to the third week of August while judging will be from Aug 31 to Sept 16.
