M'kini reporter is 'Online Journalist of the Year'

Malaysiakini journalist Aidila Razak won the ‘Online Journalist of the Year’ award at the second National Press Club (NPC)-Naza Awards ceremony held last night.

Malaysiakini journalist Aidila Razak won the ‘Online Journalist of the Year’ award at the second National Press Club (NPC)-Naza Awards ceremony held last night.
She received RM5,000 and a trophy that was presented by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
The category was created this year in recognition of the thriving online media in Malaysia.
Aidila, 27, joined Malaysiakini in October 2009 after graduating from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Journalism.
"I am honoured to be named ‘Online Journalist of the Year’, especially as this is the first year the award is introduced,” she said.
"I hope that the coming years will see more entries and more online journalists being recognised for the hard work they put in, especially in providing a diversity of news and views on the Malaysian news landscape."
In silent protest against the government’s clampdown on freedom of expression, Aidila wore a black outfit with yellow floral motif, and a yellow rose in her hair.
"This award is not just a recognition of Malaysiakini’s work, but also a reminder of its responsibility to report independently and truthfully when archaic legislation prevents others from doing so.
"Our role as an independent organisation is paramount, especially now as Malaysians face a deluge of contradicting information about the July 9 rallies, ” Aidila said.
Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan said Aidila richly deserves the recognition.
"She joined us less than two years ago. Fresh from the university, she is one of the brightest rookie journalists I have come across. She has great potential to be an excellent journalist in years to come." he said.

"We are particularly appalled by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) instruction to TV and radio stations to demonise polls watchdog coalition Bersih 2.0. MCMC has no business ordering journalists as to what to report or not," Gan said.

Another new category introduced this year - the NPC-Sime Darby Blogger of the Year - went to Paul Tan who blogs at www.paultan.org
Shahanaaz Habib of Star was the NPC-Scomi Journalist of the Year, while NTV7 broadcast journalist Melissa Ong took the NPC-Celcom Young Journalist of the Year award.
The NPC-AmBank Media Legend Award went to former journalist Khalidah Adibah Amin, 74, for her dedication in fighting for the rights of the media. A former teacher, she is also a novelist.
Former Bernama news editor Musa Scully was given the NPC-TM Lifetime Achievement for five decades of contribution to both journalism and the public relations industry.
The NPC-Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin SM Amin ‘1Malaysian of the Year’ award went to national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang for his contributions in sports.
Star group chief editor Wong Chun Wai and outgoing NPC president Ahirudin Attan respectively received the NPC-Celcom Media Personality and NPC-Maxis Media Icon awards.
