Six suspected of links with 'foreign elements'

Deputy Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said the six Parti Socialis Malaysia members detained under the Emergency Ordinance were suspected to be involved with “foreign elements”.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said the six Parti Socialis Malaysia members detained under the Emergency Ordinance were suspected to be involved with “foreign elements”.
The six, which include Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (right), have been re-arrested under Section 3 (1) of the Emergency Ordinance 1969. Under the section, a person can be held up to 60 days without trial.
They were re-arrested at 1.20pm today after their remand under section 122 of the Penal Code for allegedly attempting to wage war against the king expired today.
Khalid said based on preliminary information, all the six were suspected to be involved with foreign elements and had subversive tendencies.
Asked to elaborate, Khalid said: "That is why we re-arrested them, so that more investigations can be carried out... for now were are unable to reveal more information."
"Police re-arrested them to prevent any crimes of a violent nature from happening besides allowing us to do follow-up investigations," he told reporters at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.
Extension of remand to 24 others
Khalid said police would also be applying to the court to extend the remand order on the remaining 24 people because some more investigations needed to be done.
He added that the number of people detained across the country in connection with illegal street demonstrations planned for July 9 now stood at 150.
Meanwhile, on the detention of Selangor state executive councillor Ronnie Liu at midnight yesterday, he said it was because Liu had allegedly incited people to join the July 9 illegal street demonstrations while speaking before a gathering in Hulu Selangor.
Khalid also said that as of yesterday, a total of 2,389 police reports were lodged throughout the country by civil society groups and individuals in protest of the July 9 street demonstrations.
