Gopeng MP Dr Lee Boon Chye and Simpang Pulai state assemblyperson Chan Ming Kai and two PKR members were arrested at the Gunung Rapat morning market in Ipoh while meeting voters this morning, for being in yellow clothes.
The quartet were released later in the afternoon.
Lee said he was detained soon after his arrival at the market, around 9am.
He was handcuffed and taken to the Ipoh police district headquarters.
"I did not wear a Bersih T-shirt, it was a T-shirt, but in yellow colour.
"I just arrived at the market and started to shake hands with voters, then they arrested me," he said when contacted, adding that he did not distribute leaflets, nor did he have a banner at that time.
Police told Lee that he was arrested under the Police Act to prevent an illegal assembly.
‘Bersih hysteria’
Chan and another party activist were donning Bersih t-shirts when they were arrested. The forth person arrested was clad in white.
Police told Lee that he was arrested under Section 27 (5) of Police Act to prevent an illegal assembly. All four were handcuffed before being placed in a police truck.
Lee described the arrests as “ridiculous” and that the police was suffering from “Bersih hysteria”.
"Is wearing yellow clothes illegal? Which democratic country allows police to arrest people for wearing yellow? Their action is politically motivated,” he said.
Later, on micro-blogging website Twitter, Chan claimed that the police had refused Lee’s request to attend to his patients at the hospital. Lee is a practicing cardiologist.
He also quipped that those who need more police patrols in their neighborhood should contact him and he would go there in yellow clothes.
The nationwide clampdown starting last week had hauled up several opposition elected representative including Sungai Siput MP Dr D Micheal Jeyakumar, Jalong assemblyperson Leong Mei Ming and Teja assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang.
