Pointing this out, PKR Wanita head Zuraida Kamaruddin urged premier Najib Abdul Razak to shorten the deadline towards women assuming a more active role in governance and business.
If Pakatan Rakyat comes to power at federal level, it will give prominent roles to women, she said today.
Zuraida said Malaysia has ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, while the country has been independent since 1957.
Yet, women do not have equal opportunities to assume key roles, she said.
Yesterday, Najib had announced that 30 percent of places in the board of directors of companies must be kept for women in five years’ time.
Zuraida said a study revealed that at present only 18 per cent of women have roles in companies in Malaysia and this is certainly not good enough as their contribution to society has been a lot.
"Certainly Malaysian women should have progressed further than that since we ratified the convention in 1995," she said.
