In pleading guilty, Rahim claims moral victory

Despite pleading guilty for abetting a sex video screening, former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik is claiming a moral victory.

He said the court charge was part of a larger effort to expose opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, whom he accused of hypocrisy.

"The hypocrisy of this leader, who (has) been in existence for so long in the country, must be stopped and destroyed.

"We are doing this all for the sake of safeguarding the country's interest and the national security," he told reporters after sentencing at Kuala Lumpur magistrates court.

Earlier, he was sentenced to a RM1,000 fine or a default of one month's jail for abetment under section 109 of the Penal Code.

Businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and former Perkasa treasurer Shuaib Lazim were jointly charged for possession and distribution of pornography under Section 292 (a) of the Penal Code.

Rahim: Paying the price for patriotism

They had allegedly committed the offence between 10.30am and 12pm at the Carcosa Seri Negara hotel on March 21.

Both Shazryl and Shuaib were sentenced to RM3,000 in default of three months' jail and RM1,500 in default of two months' jail respectively.

Unsatisfied with the punishment, Rahim said it was a small price to pay for patriotism.

"Although I'm not too happy with the punishment meted out, but as a patriotic citizen, we are always ready to sacrifice for the rakyat," he said.

A known political foe of the PKR de facto leader since the late '80s, Rahim insisted that the man in the video is the “morally corrupt” Anwar.

"That's why we think that Anwar, and all his hypocrisy, is not fit to lead the country. All three of us (accused) sacrificed ourselves to achieve this goal, so that the people can see for themselves and judge.

Supporters scuffle with journalists

"My hope is that there should not be a shadow of a doubt to what I have been saying all this while anymore.

"Let no one say that 'it looks like Anwar Ibrahim', for it is Anwar Ibrahim in the video," he said, adding that people should keep this point in mind when casting their votes in the next election.

As the Datuk T trio tried to leave the court complex, a scuffle broke out between journalists and some 100 supporters of the group. 

The supporters had attempted to form a human barricade to clear a path for the trio, while the journalists were trying to snap photographs and speak to them.

Some journalists complained about being pushed and verbally abused. 

This led to a chaotic scene because the pack of journalists were chasing the trio down a flight of stairs to the driveway, causing some to lose their balance.
