Customers offered rebates for energy efficiency

The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry will launch the 'sustainability achieved via energy efficiency (Save) programme under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) on July 7.

Through the Save programme to improve energy efficiency in Malaysia through five initiatives, the government is expected to introduce rebates for refrigerators, air-conditioners and chillers for qualified consumers to improve energy efficiency in the country.
Its minister Peter Chin Fah Kui said under the initiative, qualified consumers will be given a rebate of RM200 for a new refrigerator and RM100 for an air-conditioner.
Both are household items while the chillers are for commercial use.
Save will be implemented through the collaboration between the ministry and utility companies Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Sarawak Electricity Bhd and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd as well as the participating appliance manufacturing companies.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had on June 13 announced nine new initiatives under the ETP which will bring in RM2.77 billion in investments, with a Gross National Income (GNI) impact of RM18.67 billion and 36,595 new jobs by 2020.
Commenting on the critical supply of electricity in Sabah, Chin said the electricity tariff in the state would be reviewed so that the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) would not be burdened with the rising cost of producing electricity.
"Every year SESB suffers losses because for every unit of electricity sold to consumers, SESB loses 5 sen. We want SESB to function like a self-sustainable entity which can operate with its own funds," he said.
According to Chin, SESB received an initial allocation of RM1.849 billion from the government under the eighth and ninth Malaysia Plan, while the RM2.663 billion for operations was also not enough.
