The government could soon start to hold rice smugglers under a tough security law which allows detention without trial, local media reported today.

The Internal Security Act (ISA) could be used against rice smugglers if their action is considered to be economic sabotage, Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.

"If there is proof and connection with economic sabotage, I think it is appropriate that the ISA is used," Abdullah was quoted as saying by The Star.

Abdullah, who is also Home Minister, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and urged authorities to intensify efforts to combat rice smuggling.

Affecting local industry

"Now that it has reached this stage, action cannot be delayed any further and should be taken fast."

Last year 200,000 tonnes of rice were smuggled into the country, costing the local industry at least RM240 million, according to official figures.

Malaysia needs 1.8 million tonnes of rice a year. The country produces 1.2 million tonnes and the balance is imported by the government-appointed agency Bernas.
