Car sellers, dealers and consumers have been advised to remain calm as the government is now trying to resolve their concern over the implementation of the Hire Purchase Act 1967 (Amendment 2010), beginning today.

NONE Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Koh Tsu Koon ( extreme left in picture ) said the three parties were perturbed since the act provided additional inspection on used-cars before their sale, which in their opinion would incur additional cost and delay.

"Therefore, they are worried over the enforcement of this new provision, including provision of the down-payment," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

 

On June 9, Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob ( above, beside Koh ) announced that used-vehicle sellers would have to pay RM90 inspection fee to Puspakom before a sale could be made.

Under this act, sellers may request for 10 per cent deposit from buyers as required. An additional 14 items have been added to ensure safety unlike previously, where only four items were up for inspection.

Koh said the government's aim was to protect the safety and welfare of dealers, sellers and consumers.

NONE However, if they were facing difficulties due to the implementation, then a better solution was needed, he noted.

"I will discuss with the minister (Ismail Sabri) and try to come up with a better solution," he said.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association president Khoo Kah Jin pointed out that the current four inspections were adequate to protect the public.

"So now, we have the domestic trade, cooperative and consumerism ministry imposing 18 items for inspection, which we deem as overlapping and would burden the 'rakyat' especially the lower income group.

"Therefore, we are appealing to the ministry to listen to our appeal to solve this matter in a better way," he said.

Later, Koh met Ismail Sabri to discuss the matter with association representatives.
