PKR HQ premises to go under the hammer

The building that houses the PKR headquarters will be put up for auction tomorrow, leaving the party’s (physical) future in doubt.
The building that houses the PKR headquarters will be put up for auction tomorrow, leaving the party’s (physical) future in doubt.
Confirming this, treasurer-general William Leong (left) said the auction will be held at the auctioneer’s office in Brickfields tomorrow afternoon.
The bids will begin at RM460,000 to RM1 million per unit, depending on the floor on which it is located.
Although Leong had previously told Malaysiakini that PKR may consider buying the building, he said this will now depend on the price.
“There is a decision by the party leadership but it depends on the price,” he said when contacted.
At the same time, no one has indicated to PKR that they are interested in buying the building.
Still, said Leong, someone from the party lawyer’s office will be despatched to monitor the auction and possibly make a bid.
PKR found itself in a spot of bother when the landlord of the property failed to service the bank loan, resulting in the building being put up for auction.
The party is currently renting the five-storey premises from a company, at a monthly rental of between “RM10,000 and RM20,000".
However, several anti-PKR blogs have claimed that the party had defaulted on the rent.
In 2008, the party relocated from a tiny office in Brickfields to the building in upmarket Merchant Square Tropicana, Selangor.
PKR vice-president Tian Chua had previously said the party had signed a six-year lease, of which three years remains.
According to Bernama, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said the party had not ruled out the possibility of placing a bid
for the property if the price was reasonable but refused to reveal what would be the reasonable price that the party would consider.
"The quoted auction price is RM6.1 million which is very high.
"However, in any commercial auction, we will wait until the price goes down. If the price is reasonable, then we may buy it," he was quoted as saying.
