The government today condemned the bombing of a luxury hotel in neighbouring Indonesia that killed at least 10 people and left more than 70 injured.

"Malaysia condemns this act of terror. The attack has no face, no colour and is not related to religion. It is done by irresponsible people. It affects the lives of innocent people," Shafie Apdal, deputy defence minister told AFP.

"This act does not resolve anything," he added.

Terror attack

A car bomb ripped through the American-owned JW Marriott hotel in the business district of Indonesia's capital Jakarta. Indonesian Defence Minister Matori Abdul Jalil described the blast as a "terrorist attack."

Shafie said Malaysia would monitor the situation closely since it was concern that it would worsen Indonesia's economy.

"We are concerned about the attack. Indonesia is our neighbour and we fear it will worsen its economy," he said.

Shafie said Kuala Lumpur was confident Jakarta would be able to contain the attack. - AFP
