"Siti Nurhaliza has agreed to join the Territorial Army with the support of her husband. I will also invite several actors to join the team."

He said this to reporters after presenting excellent service awards for National Service Training Department's (JLKN) staff and conferred the rank of honorary colonel to its director-general Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil at the Defence Ministry today.

Ahmad Zahid said those who joined the Territorial Army would be requested to undergo and complete 39 hours of training a year before they could be commissioned as junior officers.

He said the participation of these local celebrities could attract more individuals under the age of 35 to join the Territorial Army.

Search and rescue missions

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) were prepared to carry out secondary tasks like in searching and rescuing victims of natural disasters, including landslides.

He said although the natural duty of the ATM was to safeguard and protect the sovereignty of the country, they were still prepared to participate in aid and humanitarian missions.

The minister said this was because ATM had all the equipment and machineries, as well as well-trained personnel, to face the state of emergency, including natural disasters.

"In the recent landslide tragedy in Hulu Langat, I have personally asked Armed Forces chief Jen Azizan Ariffin and Army chief Jen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin to deploy our men to the location, not just to show our faces and equipment, but to really offer our help," he added.
