PKR vice-president N Surendren has taken his Umno counterpart Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task for alleging that the threat to kidnap Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar's child is an “opposition ploy to gain sympathy”.
PKR vice-president N Surendren has taken his Umno counterpart Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task for alleging that the threat to kidnap Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar's child is an “opposition ploy to gain sympathy”.
“Zahid’s (left) statement is false, inappropriate and extremely prejudicial to the ongoing police investigation into the kidnap threat.
“Instead of showing concern for the serious threat made against an innocent child, Zahid has disgraced his high office by playing politics,” Surendren said in a statement.
He said it is “grossly unbecoming” of a senior cabinet minister - Ahmad Zahid is the defence ministe - to issue such a statement, knowing full well that the matter is under investigation.
Surendren (right) dismissed Ahmad Zahid’s statement as the standard Umno modus operandi of disregarding the law and improperly exerting influence in order to achieve political goals.
He further condemned the “reprehensible” statement by Ahmad Zahid, demanding that the minister withdraws his allegations and apologise.
The PKR veep also asked for assurances that police investigations into the kidnap threat will be swift and fair despite the minister's dismissal of the matter.
Yesterday Ahmad Zahid had expressed doubt that the threat to kidnap Nurul Izzah’s three-year old daughter is genuine.
“They are sitting on the edge of a cliff where even a gentle breeze can make them fall. That’s why they are looking for something to hold on to,” he commented.
Nurul Izzah lodged a police report at Dang Wangi police station last Friday, over an anonymous SMS she received threatening the kidnap of her daughter.
According to her, the text message she received on Wednesday while in Doha, Qatar, warned that her daughter will suffer the same fate as Sharlinie Mohd Nashar, a five-year-old who went missing while playing with her sister near her house in Petaling Jaya three years ago.
