PAS No 2: Mat Sabu ahead of Nasharudin

Supporters of former PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu claim that PAS members in at least five states are in favour of his candidacy in the contest for the party’s deputy president position slated for this June.

More than half of the party’s divisions in Johor, Perak, Kedah, Sabah and Negeri Sembilan have nominated Mohamad for the bid to be PAS’ number two, they said.
According to party sources, the divisions in Johor made up the highest number of those supporting Mohamad’s candidacy with 15 of the party’s 26 divisions in the state having nominated the Kedah politician for the post.
They are followed by PAS’ Perak divisions (13 of 24 divisions), Kedah (8 of 15), Sabah (5 of 8) and Negeri Sembilan (4 of 8), which have nominated ‘Abang Mat', as Mohamad is popularly known.
“The results (of nominations) were obtained after several checks (in all of the divisions),” said a source close to the Kuala Kedah member of parliament.
The party insider also said that party divisions in other states have nominated Mohamad for the deputy president contest, including Federal Territory (2 divisions), Penang (5), Selangor (4), Perlis (2), Melaka (2), Kelantan (6), Pahang (3) and Sarawak (1).
Azizan rising
The same sources conceded, however, that Mohamad did not receive any nominations from divisions in Terengganu.
PAS has 179 divisions throughout the country.
The source said further that since May 7, Mohamad has notched another 10 nominations to his bid, making it a total of 70 nominations.
Malaysiakini had earlier reported Mat Sabu as having 60 nominations.
The source also said that Mat Sabu’s contender, PAS incumbent deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa (right), has received 39 nominations - six more than last week.
In third place is vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who has received four nominations. Tuan Ibrahim has 17 nominations so far.
Meanwhile, Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak has received five nominations for the deputy president contest.
Salahudin, Nizar have not yet qualified
Another vice-president, former PAS Youth chief Salahudin Ayub, remains head to head with former Perak menteri besar Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin, both of whom have one nomination each.
Tuan Ibrahim, Salahudin and Pokok Sena parliamentarian Mahfuz Omar are expected to defend their posts as vice-presidents.
As of now, only Mohamad and Nasharuddin have openly offered themselves for the post of number two. This is the former’s second attempt to oust Nasharuddin from the post, which the latter has held for two terms.
In 2009, Mohamad and Nasharudin tussled over the number two post in a three-way contest that saw Nasharudin succeed in defending his position with 480 votes.
Mohamad came in last with 261 votes, afer Kelantan exco Husam Musa (above), who recieved 281.
PAS has slated party polls and its annual muktamar to be held over three days starting June 3 at its former headquarters in Taman Melewar, Gombak.
The muktamar for the party’s wings - Dewan Pemuda (Youth), Dewan Muslimat (Women) and Dewan Ulama (Scholars) - will have their respective polls two days before the larger muktamar.
