Stop the lies, says anti-fitnah group
A loose coalition opposed to the widespread release of a sex video allegedly involving PKR de facto chief Anwar Ibrahim today demanded that action be taken under all applicable laws against those involved in the alleged fitnah or slander of the senior politician.
Saf anti Fitnah (SAF) or the Anti Slander Front said they will give the authorities one month to make their move, failing which the group will organise a “mammoth rally” to show the people’s anger against such character attacks.
The group made the threat during a minor protest rally at the national mosque after Friday prayers, where some 30 members of SAF declared the beginning of Hari Amarah Rakyat or the People’s Day of Rage.
Among those who claimed membership in SAF include the Malaysian Muslim Undergraduates Coalition (Gamis), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka workers’ association, and the youth wings of PKR, PAS and DAP.
There were however about as many reporters and photographers at the rally, aside from a strong presence of some 50 police officers at the scene.
After spending some 30 minutes calling for a stop to gutter politics and chanting slogans slamming Umno and the mainstream media for allegedly promoting the video, the protesters marched across the road to the Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department (Jawi) to present a 10-point memorandum.
Among the more prominent points in the memorandum was the call for the all the sultans in Malaysia to intervene and stop the slander, which they claim is an insult to Islam and its laws.
The memorandum also demanded that Jawi act against Anwar’s accusers, who the group claim have committed the offence of wrongfully accusing the former deputy Prime Minister of committing adultery.
The memorandum also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and all the state muftis or Islamic leaders to reprimand the perpetrators behind the release of the sex video and bring them to book.
