Student repents after converting to Christianity

A Muslim student, who previously admitted that he had converted to Christianity, told the Kota Bharu Syariah High Court today that he had repented and returned to Islam.

With that plea, judge Abu Bakar Abdullah Kutty ordered the Dungun branch Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) culinary art student Mohamad Fariz Ilham Mohd Zulkifli, from Pengkalan Chepa, to join the congregation for prayers at the Dungun UiTM mosque and report to the imam of the mosque for six months effective today.
Abu Bakar also ordered Mohamad Fariz, 19, to report to the Dungun Islamic Religious Office weekly and surrender his passport to the court.
The judge also cancelled the order to send Mohamad Fariz to the faith rehabilitation centre in Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor, after he was satisfied that the teenager was capable of reciting the al-fatihah, syahadah and istighfar well.
On April 24, Mohamad Fariz's family referred him to the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department after he admitted to have committed apostasy and converted to Christianity.
Following the application to prevent the teenager from renouncing Islam, the Syariah High Court then issued a one-week remand order on him.
The application stated that Mohamad Fariz, who used the pseudonym 'Tyrone', had been showing interest in and attending church services since Dec 3, 2010, besides admitting to having the intention to change his religion overseas.
However, in today's proceedings, the teenager told the court that he had repented after being held under remand at the Pengkalan Chepa prison.
He also asked the court not to send him to the faith rehabilitation centre as he was still pursuing his studies at UiTM.
The prosecution was conducted by syariah senior deputy prosecutor Zaini Sulaiman under Section 102 (3) of the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council Enactment 1994.
