Umno worries over disunity in certain divisions

Umno is perturbed over disunity of its members in certain divisions on the back of the party's steady recovery after the 2008 general election, said its deputy president, Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the quandary had to be resolved quickly while there were still avenues to strengthen the party at the divisional level in the face of mounting challenges.
Previously, lack of seriousness or lackadaisical attitude towards solving the people's problems proved costly to Umno, he said when opening the Tenggara Umno division delegates meeting at Felda Penggeli Timur in Johor today.
With the political transformation carried out by Umno, he said major changes were being undertaken to address the disunity and quagmire to create a vibrant party in championing the well-being of the people.
Muhyiddin, who is also deputy prime minister, said that the transformation encompassed strengthening unity of the party from the national to the grassroots levels to restore power and enable the party to focus on matters close to the hearts of the people.
He said Umno members were shaken by the opposition onslaughts in the last general election by denying the BN two-thirds majority but their morale had been restored.
The people's confidence in Umno and the BN was on the upswing following positive political changes being implemented, he added.
At the function, Muhyiddin were joined by Tenggara Umno division head Baderi Dasuki and divisional vice-head Suhaimi Khalid cut the yellow glutinous rice to mark the 65th anniversary of Umno, which falls on May 11.
