The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), an agency under the Information Communication and Culture Ministry, has no specific role to play in the proposed 1Malaysia e-mail project, except ensuring that it is carried out in adherence to the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

NONEMinister Rais Yatim (left) said the government was not involved in the e-mail scheme either financially or operationally.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the scheme would be fully undertaken by Tricubes Bhd under what he described as normal business practices.

"They (Tricubes) will disclose further details with regard to their investment. But I can confirm that the company has made an initial investment of RM5.3 million, and that there's no doubt about its commitment regarding the implementation of the project.

NONE"The company intends to market its services as agreed upon in the contract which has been signed," he said.

Tricubes is collaborating with Microsoft to develop the project, whereby Malaysians aged 18 and above will be assigned a unique e-mail account.

Rais also reiterated Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's assertion
that the government would not censor the Internet.

However, he said, those who misused the technology and flouted laws pertaining to pornography and betting, for example, could face legal action.
