Husam nominated for PAS president

In a highly surprising move, the Bukit Bintang PAS division has nominated senior Kelantan exco member Husam Musa for the post of president at its annual muktamar, scheduled for June.

It also nominated former vice-president Mohamad Sabu as deputy president.

Meanwhile, Mohamad also received nominations from the Muar and Kubang Kerian divisions, enabling him to qualify to contest for the deputy presidency.

The Muar and Kubang Kerian divisions nominated incumbent president Abdul Hadi Awang as president.

In 2009, Husam ( left ) contested for the deputy presidency in a three-way fight with Mohamad and incumbent Nasharuddin Md Isa.

According to Bukit Bintang division chief Mohd Radzi Hashim, the division also nominated two incumbents for vice-president namely Salahuddin Ayub and Mahfuz Omar.

The division also nominated former Perak menteri besar Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin for vice-president.

For nominations for the posts of members of the Islamic party’s central committee, the decision has been left to the Bukit Bintang committee members.

In 2009, the division had nominated Kelantan menteri besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat for the president's post, but the PAS spiritual leader rejected the nomination.

Mohd Radzi told Malaysiakini that the division believes Husam and the other nominees can provide leadership based on the current political situation.

"The grassroots want leaders who can bring change to the party at the current time.

"We do not want to undermine Hadi’s leadership but there is a need for the party to change with time," he said, adding that Hadi (right) can be placed in the Syura council so that he can strengthen it in monitoring and giving advice to the executive council.

Mohd Radzi said if Abdul Hadi is in the Syura council he could assist Nik Aziz and advise party members not to violate party discipline.

"The mix of ulama and professionals would help strengthen the party in the coming general election," he said.
