The Penang Health Department has sent samples of’ ‘fake’ eggs obtained from two egg sellers in a Pulau Tikus market, for laboratory tests in Kuala Lumpur.

Its food safety and quality control division deputy director, Ku Nafishah Ku Ariffin, said the samples were sent to the laboratory about 2pm today.

She told Bernama that the results were expected to be known within a week.

The issue involving the ‘fake’ eggs was highlighted by Consumers Association of Penang president SM Mohamed Idris, following a complaint from a housewife who had brought the eggs to his office.

Investigations by the association revealed that the shell of the ‘fake’ eggs was made from paraffin wax, gypsum powder and calcium carbonate.

Nitrium, alganite, alum, gelatine, benzoic acid, calcium chloride, water and food colouring products made up the contents of its white and yolk.
