Amendments to Interlok will be implemented as decided by Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin when answering questions in Dewan Rakyat last week.

Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong said what was decided in parliament became an automatic directive to relevant agencies.

"It is a directive to the director-general and I am sure that he will follow up the matter," he said when winding up the ministry's Supplementary Supply Bill (2010) 2011 in Kuala Lumpur today.

Wee asked members of parliament not to sensationalise the issue as all parties were given ample room to get clarification on the novel written by national laureate Abdullah Hussain.

Muhyiddin told Abd Rahman Bakri (BN-Sabak Bernam) the government agreed with findings of the independent panel that only 19 of 106 proposals were sensitive to Indians.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the independent panel believed that the remaining 87 items were unrelated to major issues.

To a suggestion by Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) to replace the novel, Wee said all parties should accept the amendments.

Interlok became controversial after it was introduced as a Bahasa Malaysia  literature textbook for form five students.
