The Selangor government has appointed a private security consultant to beef up security and conduct random sweeps on the offices of prominent state officials, as a bulwark against espionage activities that target its top leadership.

“The state government has engaged Akhbar Associates to conduct (security and electronic) sweeps from time to time on our security arrangements in the state secretariat building,” replied Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim to a question from Subahan Kamal (BN-Taman Templer) in the legislative assembly today.
He explained that the security sweeps - to be conducted on his office, those of the state executive council members and the three ex-officio members - are to search for electronic devices like recorders, video cameras, and other ‘spy’ devices.
On the status of the investigation of the spy camera found in his office last August, Khalid (right) said that this is still underway.
He revealed that investigations have found that the power supply unit for the camera was bought from a shop in Subang, while the camera itself was manufactured in the Kulim High-Tech Park by a local firm.
Khalid also confirmed that several state secretariat personnel have been interviewed over the matter over their appearance in the video recordings recovered from the device found in his office.
The information was gleaned following a comprehensive and rigorous three-day security examination of the secretariat building last December, as well as investigations into the origins of the ‘spy’ cam.
“Investigations are going on, and we will record all the information. Our group of professionals will go through it to find out who is behind this act. It will take some time however. But we don’t want to organise a large-scale investigation (as) that will be a waste of public funds,” he concluded.
The video camera was found hidden behind a window curtain in the MB’s office, located on the 21st floor of the state secretariat building in Shah Alam.
According to Khalid then, he discovered the camera about 6pm when it made a beeping sound due to a low battery warning.
