Anwar Ibrahim today brushed aside calls for him to voluntarily provide his DNA sample for the Sodomy II trial.

NONEThe latest call came from his former party comrade turned nemesis Zaid Ibrahim (left), who was reported by The Malaysian Insider as saying that Anwar must provide the DNA sample if he is serious about clearing his name.

Met at a function in Shah Alam, Anwar merely offered a curt retort.

“Zaid asked me to provide my DNA? It doesn’t matter. This is his opinion as an Umno representative. We rely on the law and facts,” said Anwar.

The DNA evidence which the prosecution had tried to use in the trial was thrown out on "a technicality", according to Zaid.

Zaid, a lawyer and founder of the biggest law firm in the country, questioned Anwar’s refusal to provide a DNA sample and said the latter would lose his moral standing.

Anwar’s defence succeded in convincing the Kuala Lumpur High Court to expunge evidence on items retrieved from the lock-up cell where he was held from July 16-17, 2008.

The items are a towel, toothbrush and mineral water bottle. These items were used for retrieval of DNA.

On Sunday, Malay rights pressure group Perkasa and Gagasan Anti-Penyelewengan Selangor had held a demonstration in front of the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, demanding that Anwar should surrender his DNA sample.
