About 50 protestors gathered in front of PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today to protest Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's refusal to give his DNA sample to the police.
Led by Gerakan Anti-Penyelewengan Selangor (Gaps) chairperson Hamidzun Khairuddin, they demanded that Anwar not be given special treatment by the courts just because he is opposition leader.
"Justice must not only be given to the accused (Anwar), but also to Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan," said Hamidzun (second from right).
Saiful has alleged he was sodomised by Anwar who is in the midst of a trial for that.
Also present were 10 representatives of Malay rights group Perkasa including its Selangor chairperson Abdullah Mansur.
Abdullah said that as far as Perkasa sees it, if he is in the right then Anwar has nothing to fear.
"If he is not guilty, then why is he afraid to give his DNA?" asked Perkasa Youth Chief Arman Azha who was also there.
The crowd of demonstrators gathered at a location some 100 metres away from the PKR office, about noon, before marching to the road in front of the party headquarters.
Anwar ridiculed
They held up banners and placards ridiculing Anwar, and challenging him to give his DNA.
The 50-odd protesters were shepherded by several men who acted like their leaders, giving orders in Indonesian accented Malay.
"Disini, disini, iya," said a pony-tailed protest minder who then instructed the crowd to follow Hamidzun's lead.
The crowd gathered for about five minutes, chanting "Hidup Rakyat! Hidup Rakyat!"
Afterward, the protestors were immediately told: "Dah habis! Balik! Balik!" said one of the crowd's minders who then herded the protestors away from waiting reporters.
The NGO's protest was in response to Anwar refusing to acquiesce to the prosecution request for a fresh batch of his DNA.
The prosecution had asked for DNA from Anwar after the DNA samples from 'male Y' obtained from the cell Anwar was held in, was disqualified by the court.
The judge presiding over the sodomy two trials has yet to rule whether Anwar will be required to do so by the court.
