Foul play not ruled out in missing student case

Police are not ruling out foul play in the case of the student leader who went missing for 33 hours during campus elections last month.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Zulkifli Abdullah said today that the Brickfields Criminal Investigation Department had taken over the case and would be interviewing more people involved in the polls.

Twenty-two-year-old Masturah Abu Bakar was reported missing on Feb 19 after campaigning at a housing project in Pantai Dalam and was later found in Bangi in a daze and crying.

"Following normal procedure, we will be recording statements from more people, including students," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Zulkifli said that police were awaiting the medical report on Masturah, which will cover both her physical condition and mental state.

Masturah was reported to have received threats several days before she went missing.

Masturah was among the anti-establishment Pro-Mahasiswa candidates who won in the Universiti Malaya campus elections which ended on Feb 21.

Zulkifli asked the public not to speculate about the case while investigations were continuing.
