Jasin Umno divisional committee member Roslan Ahmad, 44, of BN was sworn in as the Merlimau assemblyperson today, about 14 hours after he was declared the winner in yesterday's by-election for the area.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at the state legislative assembly at Seri Negeri, Malacca in front of Speaker Othman Muhammad at 10.15am, just before Yang Dipertua Negeri Mohd Khalil Yaakob declared open the fourth term of the 12th state legislative assembly.

Roslan defeated Yuhaizad Abdullah, 38, of PAS with a majority of 3,643 votes.

Status quo has been maintained in the state legislative assembly following the victory, with the BN controlling 23 seats and the DAP, five.

The sitting today also paid tribute to the late Mohamad Hidir Abdullah, 54, the Merlimau assemblyperson who died on Jan 20 due to a heart attack.
