The government has temporarily frozen the import of chicken and duck meat from China over fears of an outbreak of the highly contagious bird flu, a report said today.

The temporary import freeze was to prevent the disease from entering the country, Veterinary Services Department director-general Hawari Hussein was quoted as saying.
Free from flu
"Malaysia is free from avian flu. It can also infect human beings like it happened in Hong Kong."
Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral disease that is highly contagious to chickens, turkeys, ducks and other birds.
In 1997, the virus crossed the species barrier and claimed six lives, prompting authorities to order the slaughter of Hong Kong's entire poultry population.
In February another bird flu outbreak there claimed the life of one man. AFP
