MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek today denied that MCA is a cheating party, with two former transport ministers being charged in court in connection with the Prot Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.

He said there was no reason to apologise over the matter as whatever happened was the personal conduct of the leaders concerned.

NONEFurthermore, the court had yet to make any decision on the cases.

On July 29 last year, former transport minister and former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik was charged with misleading the cabinet into approving a land deal at an inflated price in connection with the development of the PKFZ.

Six months later, on Feb 28, another former transport minister, Chan Kong Choy, who was also a former MCA deputy president, was slapped with three charges of cheating in a sessions court in Putrajaya in relation to the Port Klang Free Zone scandal.

"This (the court cases) don't mirror (the) MCA... the party has had nine presidents, more than 20 deputy presidents and over a million members," Chua said, adding that leaders in the MCA "can come and go".

'No need to apologise'

He said this at a press conference before launching the One Malaysia Community Alliance Foundation Services van in Merlimau town.

Chua was responding to a statement by DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang yesterday, in which Lim demanded that the MCA apologised on behalf of Ling and Chan.

"If Lim Kit Siang wants us to apologise, we want him to apologise to the Chinese community for his deeds for so long," he lashed out at the DAP veteran, citing a few instances to support his claim.

Chua said the DAP as a political party had a tendency tp demand that others resign or apologise for alleged misdeeds, but sometimes the issues involved human factors as well as personal conduct.

That's the reason the MCA did not ask people to resign and apologise. It was not necesary to politicise each and every issue.
 

Therefore, he added, there was no necessity for the MCA to apologise on behalf ofLing and Chan. Any need to apologise rested with the two former leaders.
