Humour is charging down the campaign trail, with popular comedian Bob Lokman on a mission to help PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim clinch the Kerdau by-election.
Humour is charging down the campaign trail, with popular comedian Bob Lokman on a mission to help PAS candidate Hassanuddin Salim clinch the Kerdau by-election.
The funny man and well-known lyricist spent the first of two days in Kerdau speaking at a pasar malam campaign stop, tickling the crowd of about 100 passers-by looking for a bit of evening entertainment.
Bob, 47, whose real name is Mohd Hakim Lokman, held the crowd’s attention for a good 30 minutes, sliding in some snide remarks about BN and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in between his comedic routine.
He told the c
rowd that BN had paid him between RM2,000 and RM3,000 for every appearance in the past whenever he was asked to help them during general election and by-election campaigns.
But before anyone could begin to take his claim seriously, he hit their funny bone again as he pretended not to remember the name of BN candidate Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad.
He finally settled on calling the latter “Side Effect”, a pun on the first part of Syed Ibrahim’s name which is pronounced sa-id.
Bob, who wrote the lyrics to classic Malay hit ‘Isabella’, ended his routine by asking voters to support Hassanuddin, whose expertise as a career quantity surveyor makes him a handy choice as he knows “just how wide is Allah’s earth”.
“He doesn’t even need a certificate from Al-Azhar (University),” he said, poking fun at Syed Ibrahim, who holds a master’s degree in Arabic from the prestigious university.
Hassanuddin and Syed Ibrahim are in a straight fight for the Kerdau state seat, which fell vacant with the death of incumbent Zaharuddin Abu Kassim in mid-February.
The polls will be held on March 6, simultaneously with the Merlimau by-election.
