MCA on track to hold EGM

MCA is on track to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) next month to amend the party constitution and pave the way for a postponement of the party election, provided enough delegates agree to such a requisition.

However, MCA secretary-general Kong Cho Ha said the party delegates still have until 5pm tomorrow to submit their requisitions to the party headquarters.
"I heard most of them have signed but I'm not sure the actual figure as it was handled by MCA Headquarters (HQ) staff. The dateline was supposed to be today but since it is a Sunday and the HQ staff are not working, we allow them to submit before 5pm tomorrow," he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.
MCA has 2,370 central delegates and under the party constitution, the EGM can be called either by the directive of the party president or requisition by one-third of the party's total delegates.
"Once we receive all the requisitions, we will sit down and discuss the exact date for the EGM if is enough requisitions," said Kong.
MCA Selangor Chairman Donald Lim said most of the delegates in state have signed the requisition for EGM.
"Selangor has the largest number of Central delegates, 432 in total, and 371 of the 432 have already signed the requisition last week," he said when contacted.
Negeri Sembilan MCA Chairman Yeow Chai Tiam said all 118 of the 122 central delegates from the state had signed the requisition for EGM.
"Only four didn't sign. One is abroad, another one has passed away while two others did not want to sign," he said.
Terengganu state chairman Toh Chin Yaw said a majority of the 50 central delegates had signed up.
MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong said several divisions have even achieved 100 percent support for the party election to be postponed and support the move to hold an EGM to amend the party constitution.
"For example, in the Johor Baharu division, all 22 delegates signed for the requisition. Same goes to Air Hitam division, where all 17 have signed for it," he said.
MCA are expected to convene an EGM next month to allow its central delegates to decide whether to postpone party elections due on the same month.
The EGM is necessary to amend a provision in the party constitution, which stated that the party can decide on postponing its election only 42 months after the previous general election, in this case March 8, 2008.
The party elections are due in March, which is only 36 months from the March 2008 general election.
Therefore, a resolution - to postpone party elections and convene it within six months of the next general election – would be tabled at the EGM.
A party insider said the EGM was likely to be held on March 13, a week after the Merlimau and Kerdau by-elections, held on March 6.
