The Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial resumed today with the continuation of the re-examination of chemist and local DNA specialist Dr Seah Lay Hong by DPP Noorin Badaruddin.

Yesterday, she had testified that she had detected a mystery male's DNA at a seminal spot in victim Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's underpants. This male was dubbed "Male Y".

azlanBesides this, the unidentified "Male Y" sample was also found on four of the cotton swabs of Saiful's anal and rectal region. The examination was done by Hospital Kuala Lumpur doctors two days after the alleged sodomy act.

However, it is the discovery of a third male DNA in one of the cotton swabs besides "Male Y" and Saiful's DNA  that has added intrigue to the already convoluted case.

Lawyer Sankara Nair said there is a possibility that the defence will cross examine Seah today.

8.33am: Anwar arrives with wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

9.00am: Trial kicks off as Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Justice  Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah enters the courtroom.

9.10am: Seah is explaining the functions of the electropherogram equipment used in DNA testing.

9.32am: The prosecution wants the electropherogram charts of the DNA sampling done by Seah marked as exhibits.

However, lead defence counsel Karpal Singh objects to the application.

9.39am: Seah said the electropherogram machine was in good working condition on that day

"It is not like we re-do whatever results as this is provided by computer software," she said, adding the electropherogram chart is computer generated.

Karpal again objects to the admission of the chart as evidence for the prosecution as it is computer generated.

"If the prosecution is adamant to have it admitted we should go on with a trial within trial," he said.

"If you want to admit it can be admitted during re-examination," he said.

Justice Zabidin allowed the chart to be admitted but subject to cross-examination.

9.49am:  Ram Sigh Karpal Singh begins cross-examining Seah. 

9.58am: Seah denied counsel's suggestions that she  had assumed the software used in conducting genetic analysis was running well.

10.08am: Ram Karpal zeros in on cotton swab B5, taken from Saiful's anus, comparing it with a chart generated by the software.

Seah had testified yesterday that DNA from Saiful, "Male Y" and another unidentified male was found on the swab.

10.31am: Other than the Applied Biosystem Genetic Analysis software, Seah said a DNA View equipment was used for getting the statistical analysis.

NONESeah said she is proficient in using that software as well as possesing a certificate to operate it.

This was despite her earlier claim that three engineers had been called in for maintenance of the Genetic Analysis equipment.

10.38am: Seah concurred with Ram that she did not carry out a match probability test for the B5 swab.

10.52am: Court in recess for 30 minutes to allow defence to look at the exhibits.

11.29am: After both parties met the judge in chambers, it was announced that hearing was adjourned to 3pm. 

2.55pm: Anwar walks in with wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Anwar is seen talking to a representative from the Polish embassy.

3.05pm: Trial resumes. Chemistry Department DNA specialist Dr Seah Lay Hong takes the witness stand.

3.20pm: Seah said the chemistry department's work is a tightly regulated field that abides by international quality control and forensic guidelines.

3.31pm: Seah agreed that she used Saiful's blood sample as a reference but disagreed that this will cause bias in her findings.

3.43pm: Seah said that the software used to analyse the DNA was 10 years old, butregularly updated. The last update was in 2007.

Australian DNA specialist Dr Brian McDonald hired by Anwar, is seated between defence counsel Ram Karpal and Sankara Nair.

McDonald is assisting by providing expert advice on how to question Seah.

4.06pm: Seah said the department has guidelines if the DNA was mixed like in this case.

“We have to go on ratio,” she said.

4.08pm: Ram Karpal applies to continue on Monday as he would go on a different area which would be prolonged.

However ,Justice Zabidin asked that he carry on.

4.17pm: Court adjourns to Monday.
