The High Court of Shah Alam today set May 23 to start the hearing to review the ‘open' verdict in the Teoh Beng Hock's inquest.

Justice Mohtarudin Baki in open court made the decision after seeking opinions from both parties.

The review application was filed by Attorney-General's (AG's) Chambers on Jan 7, right after the 'open' verdict decision by Coroner's Court.

NONEToday's mention proceeding was also attended by counsel representing the Teoh family, Karpal Singh (right) and Gobind Singh Deo, as well as Deputy Public Prosecutors Dzulkifli Ahmad and Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abbas.

Karpal said he believed the AG would seek to revise the case, to change the open verdict to one of suicide.

"It can't be otherwise," he told reporters outside the court.

Karpal added that the AG's chambers would not have had filed for revision if it was agreeable with the decision by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abbas who had ruled out the possibility of suicide.

On Jan 31, co-counsel Gobind Singh Deo claimed that he had seen a notice of appearance, which stated that AG's wish to revise the hearing. It also pressed for a suicide verdict.

The Teoh family had earlier opined that the revision hearing be dropped, in light of the setting up of Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Jan 26.

"We would have thought to have this (revision application) dropped, or the inquiry deferred until this is heard. We can't have both on the same time," explained Karpal today.

With Teoh family having withdrawn yesterday from participating in the RCI ,which is tasked with investigating the political aide's death, the family now would have to rely on the review hearing to seek the truth behind the mysterious death of Teoh.

The family is also seeking a judicial review regarding the RCI appointing sending three officers from the AG's chambers as conducting officers at the RCI.

On Jan 5, the coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas delivered an open verdict while at the same time dismissing suicide and homicide as causes of death, he agreed Teoh suffer a pre-fall neck injury.
