Three dead, 40,000 displaced in floods

Floods wreak havoc in several states in the country, leaving three people dead, damaging properties and forcing the evacuations of thousands of people.

Two of the casualties are in Johor while the other is in Melaka.

In Johor Bahru, Rohani Ismail, 51, was killed when the car she was driving was swept away by floodwaters in an oil palm plantation at Km145 Jalan Johor Bharu-Seremban, Chaah at about 7pm yesterday.

In another incident, Aw Yoke Lin, 53, from Taman Pelanggi was killed when her four-wheel drive vehicle was swept by floodwaters into a river at Kampung Rahmat, Kulaijaya at about 9pm yesterday.

In Malacca, a security guard at a water treatment plant in Kampung Chinchin, Jasin became the first casualty of the flood in the state.

Jasin police chief DSP Che Suza Che Hitam said the victim was reported to have fell into the plant at 10am today. His body was found by the rescue team at about 1.30pm.

Meanwhile, about 40,000 have been forced to evacuate their homes today in the two states.

Railway services in the state were cancelled until water levels return to normal, officials said.

The meteorological department forecast rain through Tuesday.
